Argyle Legends vs Plymouth Media X1 2011
The Legends went into the game with a new central defensive partnership of Chris Harrison and Jason Rowbotham, whilst recent PAFC auction winner Chris Saunders partnered Mark Damerell in a new striking partnership.
In a game of three hat tricks the Legends found it difficult to penetrate their opponents defence and 10 minutes had elapsed before Martin Barlow had a shot well saved by the home goalkeeper.
Encouraged by their good start the Plymouth Media X1 went ahead in the 13th minute when James Yates scored the first of his three goals after beating the Legends offside trap.
The Legends were spraying the ball around quite nicely but were finding it difficult to penetrate a well organised side who often had eight men behind the ball.
After 20 minutes, Gordon Nisbet, still playing his way back to fitness was replaced by Graham Kirkup.
In the 26th minute Darren Garner equalised for the Legends when he fired into the bottom corner of the net from 25 yards. Lifted by this equaliser Garner almost put the Legends ahead after 29 minutes, his glancing header going agonisingly close.
The Legends went ahead in the 36th minute when Mark Damerell scored from close range following a well worked move.
With the Chestnut Cup at stake the home side were not to be denied when James Yates scored his second of the game to make it 2-2 in the 40th minute. Inspired by this effort and in the driving rain, Yates completed his hat trick in the 42nd minute firing across Legends keeper Peter Foxwell from fully 25 yards to put the hosts 3-2 ahead at the half time interval.
The second half sprung to life in the 55th minute when Graham Kirkup was penalised for a foul and the home side went 4-2 ahead from the resultant penalty.
The Legends facing their first defeat in 5 games started to rally with Mark Damerell hitting the crossbar from close range in the 60th minute.
With Martin Barlow, Darren Garner and Mark Rowe working hard in midfield the hosts were beginning to tire and Graham Kirkup reduced the arrears in the 65th minute with a looping header.
The Legends almost equalised in the 70th minute when Mark Rowe fired narrowly over from the edge of the penalty area.
Not to be denied Darren Garner scored his second and the Legends equaliser in the 71st minute, slotting home from close range after a great cross from Spencer Cooper.
Three minutes later the Legends went ahead when auction winner Chris Sanders scored with a fine header following a great cross from David Byrne.
The Legends were now in control of the game and Mark Damerell made it 6-4 in the 76th minute with a fantastic volley from just inside the left hand side of the penalty area.
The Legends were now totally dominant and added 3 more goals in the final 10 minutes with Darren Garner and Mark Damerell both completing their hat tricks and Graham Kirkup scoring his second of the game ensuring they became the first winners of the Chestnut Cup.
Chestnut Event Organiser David Squires later announced that a sum approaching £1,500 had been raised on the day for Prostate Cancer.
