Argyle Legends vs Western Inn Vets 2010
Argyle Legends completed their preparation's for their forthcoming game against Liverpool Legends when they travelled to Blaise Park the home of St. Blazey FC to play Western Inn Vets. Although on the wrong end of a 6-2 scoreline the main purpose of the game, achieving match fitness, was an outstanding success, with 10 of the Legends side completing the full 90 minutes.
Western Inn had the better of the early exchanges and spurned a great chance to go ahead after only 5 minutes when their number 9 shot wide with only goalkeeper Gary Penhaligon to beat. Argyle Legends came more into the game and Darren Garner had a shot from 25 yards saved by the home goalkeeper. The home side went ahead in the 9th minute when an under hit pass back from a Legends defender left the Western Inn striker with a simple tap in from 5 yards.
Argyle Legends responded immediately with Jason Jones having a shot well saved. The Legends were now playing some delightful football and it came as no surprise when Mark Damerell equalised from close range in the 19th minute.
Western Inn always looked dangerous on the break and went ahead in the 27th minute with another close range goal. The Legends suffered a blow in the 29th minute when central defender Ryan Cross suffered a slight calf strain and had to be substituted. The Legends were still reorganising when the home side went 3 - 1 ahead in the 30th minute. Despite these set backs the Legends continued to press forward and reduced the arrears in the 38th minute when Micky Evans fired home from 10 yards. There was no more scoring before the interval and a highly entertaining first half ended 3 - 2 in favour of the home side.
The Legends started the second half on the offensive and could have scored 4 times in a blistering 20 minute spell, with Martin Barlow twice, Jason Jones and Micky Evans all having shots saved by the home keeper. It was somewhat against the run of play when the home side increased their lead in 66th minute. Western Inn were now showing why they are one of the best veterans sides in Cornwall and made it 5 - 2 in the 68th minute with the best goal of the game. Still the Legends pressed forward with Darren Garner having a header brilliantly saved. In the 75th minute the home side completed the scoring after a cross from the right was not cleared by the Legends defence.
Plus points for the Legends were the return of Jason Rowbotham after a long injury and Micky Evans completing 90 minutes after work commitments had curtailed his appearances. Also the injury to Ryan Cross is not serious and he should be available for the Liverpool game.
