Argyle Legends vs Shakespeare United Vets 2010
In their first game of 2010 Argyle Legends and Shakespeare United Vets shared the spoils in an exciting 2-2 draw in a memorial game for the late Brian Jefferis.
A large crowd at Weston Mill Oak Villa's ground saw the game get off to an explosive start with Shakespeare Vets taking the lead after only 2 minutes. A long ball through the middle was not dealt with by the Legends defence and a well drilled shot from Bob Evans beat Legends keeper Pete Foxwell.
Despite this early set back a strong looking Legends line up levelled after 6 minutes when Darren Garner finished off a well worked move. Exchanges were fairly even on a heavy pitch with both sides going close to scoring. It was the Legends who eventually made the breakthrough when Joe Davey fired home from the edge of the penalty area in the 28th Minute. Although both sides created chances there was no further scoring and the Legends went into the half time interval 2 - 1 ahead.
Both sides made a number of substitutions for the second half and it was the Legends, through Kevin Hodges and Martin Phillips, who looked the most likely scorers. However it was Shakespeare Vets who levelled the scoring in the 60th minute through Lee Ireland, to set up an exciting last 20 minutes.
It was now end to end stuff as both sides strove for the winning goal. Despite chances at both ends there were no further goals and the match ended in an honourable 2-2 draw.
A collection towards a Trust Fund for Brian Jefferis son Ben raised £715.00 on the day.
