Argyle Legends vs Crediton United Legends 2010
August 7 2010
It was a severely depleted Argyle Legends team that travelled to Crediton for the first game of the new season. Indeed the Legends are indebted to the hosts for providing 4 players to add to the magnificent 7 who travelled from Devon and Cornwall to fulfill this fixture as part of the celebrations for Crediton's centenary year.
The Legends Line Up of Peter Foxwell, Geoff Battams, Darren Tallon, Ryan Cross, Marcus Crocker, Kevin Nancekivell and Mark Damerell did not deserve the hammer blow of losing by the odd goal in seven with the winning goal coming 3 minutes from the end of normal time. To a man these seven players were magnificent, guiding, cajoling and willing the 4 guest players through the game against no mean opposition.
Argyle Legends went ahead after 8 minutes with a fantastic individual goal by the outstanding Ryan Cross. Playing in central midfield with the equally outstanding Kevin Nancekivell, Ryan received the ball just inside the opponents half and beat 4 players before slotting the ball pass the onrushing keeper. The lead was short lived however with the home side scoring in the 12th and 15th minute to lead 2 - 1. With Geoff Battams and Darren Tallon marshalling the defence goalkeeper Pete Foxwell only had to deal with a couple of crosses in the 1st half which ended with no further goals.
Both captains and the referee agreed the second half would be only 35 minutes duration and it was Crediton who increased their lead with a close range shot in the 52nd minute. One minute later the Legends were back in the game with a sublime finish from Kevin Nancekivell. The Legends were now dominating the game and went close to an equaliser on several occasions with Mark Damerell (twice) and Nancekivell again going agonisely close. With Marcus Crocker leading the line emphatically the equaliser eventually arrived 4 minutes from time with another magnificent individual effort from Ryan Cross. Then one minute later came the hammer blow to make it 4 - 3 to Crediton. Even then the Legends may have equalised with Marcus Crocker heading narrowly wide. Once again our sincere thanks to Rob, Kells, Skins and Bilko for making up the numbers.
